Position: Service Advisor Heavy Equipment

Department: Body Shop, Parts Department, Reception

Reports To: Reception Manager, Workshop Supervisors, Team Leaders, Technicians

1. Establish rapport and trust with customers.
2. Document vehicle problems by listening to customers describe them and by asking probing questions.
3. Road-test customer vehicles to confirm problems and, after service, to ensure that repairs have been completed.
4. Maintain extensive contact with customers, providing estimates on service and repairs before jobs begin, explaining the appointment/scheduling system, and establishing the method of payment for repairs (cash, warranty, etc.).
5. Maintain communication with the Workshop Controller and Technicians to obtain updates and status of repairs.
6. Offer additional maintenance and repair services to customers when appropriate.
7. Undertake additional related responsibilities as required.

Position Overview:
The Crane Operator 1 works under the direction of the Site Supervisor and is responsible for the safe operation of mobile, tower, or truck-mounted cranes to lift, move, position, and place construction materials, machinery, and equipment. The operator ensures that all crane activities are executed with precision, safety, and full compliance with load charts, site regulations, and project requirements.

This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.

Operate cranes to lift, move, and precisely place materials such as steel beams, precast concrete, equipment, and formwork.

Conduct daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections on crane systems including hydraulics, cables, controls, and safety devices.

Interpret lift plans, rigging instructions, and load charts to determine lifting sequences and radius requirements.

Work closely with riggers, signalers, and site engineers to execute lifts safely and accurately.

Set up crane properly using outriggers, mats, counterweights, and levelling mechanisms.

Monitor crane load limits and never exceed rated capacities.

Ensure the crane is operated on stable, suitable terrain and adjust setup if site conditions change.

Communicate effectively using standard hand signals, radios, or site communication protocols.

Secure and stow boom, jib, and rigging equipment at the end of each operation.

Assist in basic maintenance of the crane and report mechanical or hydraulic faults immediately.

Follow emergency procedures in the event of mechanical failure, shifting loads, or environmental hazards.

Comply with all project and statutory safety requirements, including PPE usage and exclusion zone protocols.

Maintain accurate lift logs and crane operation records.

Support other site operations when not operating the crane, as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certifications:

KCSE certificate minimum.

Crane Operator Certification from a recognized institution (e.g., NITA, NTSA, or accredited training body).

Rigging and Signaling certification is a strong advantage.

Safety certifications (e.g., OSHA, NCA, Defensive Driving for Operators) preferred.

Experience:

3+ years of experience operating mobile cranes, tower cranes, or truck-mounted lifting equipment.

Familiarity with hydraulic, telescopic, and lattice boom cranes.

Demonstrated experience with tandem lifts or lifting in congested or restricted spaces preferred.

Skills:

Thorough understanding of crane load charts, rigging techniques, and lift planning.

Excellent spatial awareness, coordination, and reaction time.

Strong communication and teamwork skills, especially with riggers and signalers.

Mechanical aptitude for basic troubleshooting and maintenance.

Ability to remain calm and focused during high-pressure lifts.

Other Requirements:

Physically fit and able to sit, stand, or climb for extended periods.

Must be able to work in all weather conditions heat, wind, rain, or confined urban spaces.

Willing to work overtime, night shifts, or weekends as required by project timelines.

Must pass periodic medical fitness and vision tests as required for lifting operations.

Must strictly follow all safety regulations and instructions.
