Position Overview:
The Heavy Equipment Operator 1 works under the direction of the Equipment Supervisor and is responsible for safely operating various types of heavy machinery used in construction, excavation, grading, and site preparation. This role ensures machine productivity, proper maintenance, and adherence to all safety and operational protocols.
This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.
Operate heavy machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, graders, compactors, and rollers.
Conduct daily pre-start checks and routine inspections on equipment.
Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, and load charts to determine equipment operations.
Dig trenches, foundations, and drainage systems to exact specifications.
Perform rough and fine grading for roadbeds, pavements, and platforms.
Load, move, and level earth, rock, debris, and other materials as directed.
Follow traffic control and spotter signals in congested work zones.
Communicate clearly with ground crews and site supervisors.
Perform minor repairs and maintenance, reporting major faults to maintenance team.
Maintain accurate logs of operating hours and fuel consumption.
Strictly adhere to operational safety standards and PPE requirements.
Ensure equipment is secured and stored properly after operation.
Assist in other site duties when equipment is not in use.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
Education/Certifications:
High School certificate required.
Formal training or certification in heavy equipment operation preferred.
Valid operators license or certification (e.g., NITA, NTSA, or recognized trade body).
Valid drivers license with appropriate endorsement.
Health and Safety certification (e.g., OSHA, NCA) is a strong asset.
Experience:
2+ years of experience operating heavy machinery in construction, roadworks, or quarrying.
Familiarity with both manual and hydraulic control systems.
Skills:
Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
Understanding of machine capabilities, load limits, and safe operation practices.
Ability to troubleshoot and perform basic mechanical maintenance.
Ability to read and interpret civil engineering drawings, elevations, and levels.
Strong teamwork, discipline, and situational awareness.
Other Requirements:
Must be physically fit to climb, stand, and operate machinery for extended hours.

The operator ensures that all crane activities are executed with precision, safety, and full compliance with load charts, site regulations, and project requirements.

Operate cranes to lift, move, and precisely place materials such as steel beams, precast concrete, equipment, and formwork.
Conduct daily pre-operation and post-operation inspections on crane systems including hydraulics, cables, controls, and safety devices.
Interpret lift plans, rigging instructions, and load charts to determine lifting sequences and radius requirements.
Work closely with riggers, signalers, and site engineers to execute lifts safely and accurately.
Set up crane properly using outriggers, mats, counterweights, and levelling mechanisms.
Monitor crane load limits and never exceed rated capacities.
Ensure the crane is operated on stable, suitable terrain and adjust setup if site conditions change.
Communicate effectively using standard hand signals, radios, or site communication protocols.
Secure and stow boom, jib, and rigging equipment at the end of each operation.
Assist in basic maintenance of the crane and report mechanical or hydraulic faults immediately.
