We are hiring a

Linux devices software engineer

on our SnapD team to work on mission-critical Golang code, focused on software delivery, containers, security sandboxing, telemetry and device management.

Snaps are next-generation software packaging and delivery for Linux. They are designed for safety, security and robustness, with application-specific confinement of containers optimised for IoT devices, desktops and servers. Our goal is that snaps work across multiple Linux flavors to ensure that publishers have the simplest way to reach the whole Linux world.

This role requires an obsession with quality and performance, for work at the heart of the operating system. It also requires an interest in the software publishing and consumption experience. Applicants should be passionate about open source software development. We value collaboration, peer reviews, good unit/integration testing and maintainable code. General knowledge and experience with Linux as a developer platform is required. Having previous experience with Golang is very nice to have.

Location :

This role will be based remotely in the EMEA or Americas regions

The role entails

Python, Packaging and Linux skills

and who want to have a positive impact on the day-to-day workflow of thousands of snap, rock and charm publishers. To be successful on this team you'll need to be interested in packaging formats, build systems and automation that can simplify the lives of developers and engineers trying to ship software to the widest possible audience.

We design and maintain specialist Python tools to support the developer build and publication process. The team takes responsibility for tooling that builds snaps, charms and more recently, rocks.

Snapcraft allows developers to deliver app updates to millions of Linux systems automatically, eliminating the long tail of supported releases and complex install instructions. Snapcraft enables thousands of applications from over a thousand developers, including well-recognised names like Spotify, Slack, and Microsoft.

Likewise, Charmcraft enables collaboration between charmed operator developers, and publication on Charmhub, home of the Charmed Operator Collection. Charmed Operators enable developers to package software like databases, event queues, caches, observability tools, identity tools and more, right alongside the operations code that enables teams to integrate and operate that software at scale from Day 0 to Day 1,000, and beyond.

And Rockcraft provides the means for container developers to build production-grade Ubuntu-based container images, regardless of their experience as a software developer. These container images are called Rocks and can be found in various popular container registries, like Docker Hub, offering an opinionated and consistent design that focus on security while providing an homogeneous user experience across all rocks.

What we are looking for in you

You have expertise in Python. You have a strong understanding of the makeup of a modern GNU/Linux distribution. You have a good understanding of build systems and toolchains, including for cross-compilation. Experience working with container technology, such as Docker, Kubernetes and LXD. Use your familiarity with languages, toolchains, frameworks, integrations, and CI systems to extend the snap build ecosystem Work with external open source and commercial projects to understand how we can better serve community needs.

The data platform team is a collaborative team that develops a managed solutions for a full range of data stores and data technologies, spanning from big data, through NoSQL, cache-layer capabilities, and analytics; all the way to structured SQL engines (similar to Amazon RDS approach).

We are looking for candidates from junior to senior level with interests, experience and willingness to learn around Big Data technologies, such as distributed event-stores (Kafka) and parallel computing frameworks (Spark). What your day will look like

The data platform team is responsible for the automation of data platform operations, with the mission of managing and integrating Big Data platforms at scale. This includes ensuring fault-tolerant replication, TLS, installation, backups and much more; but also provides domain-specific expertise on the actual data system to other teams within Canonical. This role is focused on the creation and automation of infrastructure features of data platforms, not analysing and/or processing the data in them.

We are hiring a Lead Python Software Engineer who strives for the highest engineering quality, seeks improvements, continuously develops their skills, and applies them at work. The Commercial Systems unit is conceived as seven engineering teams that closely collaborate with other engineering and business teams at Canonical. Services designed, developed, and operated by the Commercial Systems unit are at the heart of Canonical business and Python plays an integral role in it. The Integrations team is responsible for the automation of SAAS user management and onboarding of new data sources to the data mesh. The team designs, develops, and operates a Python based solution to automate SAAS seat management and track spend across the application portfolio. Furthermore the team integrates internal and external data sources into the data mesh using open-source ETL solutions, enabling more data driven decisions in the organization.

We are hiring a Lead Golang Software Engineer at any seniority level, who strives for the highest engineering quality, seeks improvements, continuously develops their skills, and applies them at work. This is an exciting opportunity to work with many popular software systems, integrations technologies, and exciting open-source solutions.

The Commercial Systems unit is conceived as seven engineering teams that closely collaborate with other engineering and business teams at Canonical. Services designed, developed, and operated by the Commercial Systems unit are at the heart of Canonical business and Golang plays an integral role in it. We are looking for software engineers for these teams:

The Billing team designs, develops, and operates a Golang service that provides a standardized and scalable capability to turn metrics into billable amounts, enable customers to see their current spend with Canonical at any time, and ensure accurate, reliable, and timely billing. The service further integrates with other engineering, business, payment systems. This team is an excellent match for any software engineer interested in growing their skills in the billing and payment processing domain.

The Contracts team designs, develops, and operates a Golang service that will become the single source of truth for all contracts with all customers. The service provides a standardized CPQ capability and stores signed contracts in a structured format. The service further integrates with other engineering and business systems including a CRM system and an accounting system. This team is an excellent match for any software engineer interested in understanding sales and revenue processes and growing their skills beyond software engineering.

The Livepatch team designs and develops a service for the delivery of Linux kernel patches to shrink the exploit window for critical and high severity Linux kernel vulnerabilities, by patching the Linux kernel between security maintenance windows, while the system runs. The engineering team behind this product develops Golang based client and backend components, while another Canonical team, the Kernel team, develops the security patches. This team is a great opportunity for a software engineer interested in security and with a strong focus on engineering quality and reliability.

The Ubuntu Pro backend team designs and develops backend services for the delivery of Ubuntu Pro, the most comprehensive subscription for open-source software security. The engineering team behind this product develops Golang based backend components, while the Security team at Canonical develop security patches. This team is a great opportunity for a software engineer with a strong focus on engineering quality, software performance, and reliability of operations.

Location : This role will be based remotely in the EMEA region (all teams except for Ubuntu Pro) or the AMER region (Ubuntu Pro).

• Develop engineering solutions leveraging Golang
• Lead technical designs, code reviews, and implementation
• Deploy and operate services developed by the team

The mission of the LXD team is to build a next-generation private cloud infrastructure, combining KVM, Ceph, and SDN technologies to create a data center scale cloud that 'just works' and provides a mission-critical cloud for edge and core enterprise deployments. We are hiring a Golang software engineer to work on the low level Go codebase sitting between our REST API and the low level C libraries used to manage containers and virtual machines. We are looking for system-level developers with experience in design and data management/modeling.

LXD components span the entire software stack from low-level kernel features to the upper level management API/CLI. Our most effective engineers are fluent in all these layers, and able to anticipate the consequences of design and engineering choices elsewhere in a complex distributed system.

Location : This is a remote position available in EMEA and the Americas.

What you will focus on

• Design, implement and document system level Go code
• Model data, design database schema and implement data storage in a dqlite (SQL) database
• Maintain code quality through static analysis, unit and system tests
