Position Overview:
The Heavy Equipment Operator 1 works under the direction of the Equipment Supervisor and is responsible for safely operating various types of heavy machinery used in construction, excavation, grading, and site preparation. This role ensures machine productivity, proper maintenance, and adherence to all safety and operational protocols.
This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.
Operate heavy machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, graders, compactors, and rollers.
Conduct daily pre-start checks and routine inspections on equipment.
Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, and load charts to determine equipment operations.
Dig trenches, foundations, and drainage systems to exact specifications.
Perform rough and fine grading for roadbeds, pavements, and platforms.
Load, move, and level earth, rock, debris, and other materials as directed.
Follow traffic control and spotter signals in congested work zones.
Communicate clearly with ground crews and site supervisors.
Perform minor repairs and maintenance, reporting major faults to maintenance team.
Maintain accurate logs of operating hours and fuel consumption.
Strictly adhere to operational safety standards and PPE requirements.
Ensure equipment is secured and stored properly after operation.
Assist in other site duties when equipment is not in use.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
Education/Certifications:
High School certificate required.
Formal training or certification in heavy equipment operation preferred.
Valid operators license or certification (e.g., NITA, NTSA, or recognized trade body).
Valid drivers license with appropriate endorsement.
Health and Safety certification (e.g., OSHA, NCA) is a strong asset.
Experience:
2+ years of experience operating heavy machinery in construction, roadworks, or quarrying.
Familiarity with both manual and hydraulic control systems.
Skills:
Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
Understanding of machine capabilities, load limits, and safe operation practices.
Ability to troubleshoot and perform basic mechanical maintenance.
Ability to read and interpret civil engineering drawings, elevations, and levels.
Strong teamwork, discipline, and situational awareness.
Other Requirements:
Must be physically fit to climb, stand, and operate machinery for extended hours.
Work environment includes exposure to dust, mud, noise, vibration, and extreme weather.
Willing to work shifts, weekends, or extended hours as project timelines demand.
