Job Description
A nurse educator is a nurse who teaches and prepares nurses for entry into practice positions. The nurse educator teaches in various client care settings to provide continuing education to licensed nursing staff.
**Duties and Responsibilities**
**General**:
- Planning and teaching curriculum for employees.
- Lectures on several topics.
- Oversees employees’ work.
- Serve as a mentor on academic and career issues.
- Promote discussions among employees.
**Clinical Practice**:
- Perform nursing practice in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Practice within own abilities.
- Demonstrate accountability for nursing practice.
- Maintain accreditation in mandatory and extended skills.
- Demonstrate a high level of understanding, knowledge and skills in the field of nursing.
- Maintain own competence as an active team member.
- Demonstrate expert clinical knowledge through problem solving and decision making.
- Identify strategies for optimizing client care in the retrieval environment based on current research and trends in clinical practice
**Education and Research**:
- Implement and evaluate clinical education programs and in-services for nurses.
- Initiate, participate and contribute to the development of clinical knowledge and skills of new and existing nurses.
- Provide clinical support to new and existing nurses.
- Develop and maintain clinical educational resources.
- Identify individual learning needs of nurses in consultation with the other departments in the Organization in order to support individual learning plans.
- Perform clinical assessments of nurses and provide certification of competency where required.
- Participate in the delivery of formal and informal education.
- Develop, implement and evaluate extended skills programs for nurses.
- Actively participate in activities that promote the professional development and education of nurses.
- Foster an environment that supports the utilization of nursing research.
- Participate in the development and review of clinical guidelines.
**Quality Improvement and Management**:
- Undertake the necessary components of the performance review process.
- Promote and participate in quality improvement activities and organizational accreditation processes.
- Participate in relevant committees, meetings and service activities as required and provide relevant feedback and dissemination of appropriate information
- Assess and evaluate the quality of education resources and equipment required to meet the learning needs of nurses.
- Contribute to the nursing education component of the strategic plan of the organization.
- Participate in critical incident debriefings as required.
**Professional Practice and Development**:
- Demonstrate advocacy for health professionalism.
- Actively pursue opportunities to advance own professional knowledge and skill development.
- Participate in relevant ongoing professional development programs.
- Demonstrate a commitment to professional development through membership of professional organizations/associations, including relevant participation in special interest groups.
- Demonstrate awareness of current nursing trends, initiatives and related health issues that enhance nursing practice.
- Participate in health promotion and community development activities including public relations.
- Act as an effective role model for staff, through mentoring, and teaching in an endeavor to achieve optimal staff development and service outcomes.
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Meet the requirements as registered general nurse
- Post graduate degree in nursing Minimum 1 year from recognized educational institutions.
- Or Master’s degree in nursing.
- Three (3) years clinical experience after registration as registered general nurse and 1-year experience in the same specialization after post-graduate degree in nursing AND Master’s degree in nursing.
- In case they did not obtain post graduate nor master’s degree in nursing, they are required to have five (5) years clinical experience after registration and licensing as registered general nurse and two (2) years’ experience as nurse educator.
