JOB SUMMARY
The Nurse Practitioner - Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAMHS) (NP) is a licensed independent practitioner who is responsible for managing health problems and coordinating age appropriate health care for the patient. S/he is part of the innovative care team that will meet the individual needs of the patient and their family. The NP practices in accordance with MOPH Department of Healthcare Practitioner rules and regulations and the NPs professional body’s standards of care providing evidence-based best practice care in an age appropriate care model. Included in their scope of practice is performing histories, examinations, ordering appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures along with prescribing pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Responsible for providing psychiatric services to children and adolescents in inpatient and emergency room settings and other clinical settings.
- The scope of services includes psychiatric evaluations, crisis interventions if needed, and medication management, according to written guidelines as defined by the nurse practitioner’s professional scope of practice as defined by the MOPH Department of Healthcare Practitioner and in adherence with Sidra’s agreed upon scopes of practice.
- Assess, diagnose, and treat adolescents and children experiencing symptoms of behavioral health disorders.
- Prescribe, recommend, or discontinue medications and treatments to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders (Obtains counter-signature on prescription from the supervising physician for medications not included in the approved formulary).
- Collaborate with physicians, psychologists, social workers, or other treatment team members to coordinate patient care.
- Responsible for timely and accurate completion of medical records, including assessment, treatment plan, progress notes, outcome measures, and billing entries.
- Participate in developing individualized treatment plans, incorporating best and leading practices into treatment interventions.
- Examine or order laboratory or diagnostic tests for patients to provide information on general physical conditions and mental disorders.
- Collaborate with guardians, relatives, and significant others on the patient’s conditions and treatment when clinically appropriate.
- Document assessments, progress notes, reports, and summaries within 24 hours after assessing the patients.
- Return calls and emails promptly (within 24 hours of receipt or sooner if clinically necessary).
- Respond to patient’s emergencies and be accessible during hospital working hours or on call.
- Responsible for making independent decisions based on protocols developed utilizing national guidelines (US, UK, or other international organizations) for treatment interventions.
- Submits billing documents in a timely fashion.
- Engages in teaching and education to clinical staff, if requested.
- Follow all relevant procedures and protocols of the department and the organization.
- Actively participate in all organizational and department education, training, and in-services to confirm understanding of new information or changes to established clinical policies and procedures.
- Meets Sidra’s core measures of performance related to patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of interventions. Individualizes the plan of care and treatment based upon the desired treatment outcomes.
- Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings: admissions, transfers and discharges and completes appropriate documentation.
- Works across all service lines by collaborating with multidisciplinary team members and making appropriate referrals.
- In consultation with the collaborating physician, enrolls patients in investigational studies approved by the Investigational Review Board (IRB), and orders necessary tests and medications.
- To participate in on call for psychiatry as required.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
- Master’s degree from an accredited school of nursing.
- Holds the appropriate Board Certification for specialty.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
Experience
- 5+ years of clinical experience.
- 2+ years of experience in the Nurse Practitioner role.
- 3+ years of clinical experience as a registered general nurse and 2 years of experience in the same specialization after Master’s degree or PhD.
