Lead Python Software Engineer

The Commercial Systems unit is conceived as seven engineering teams that closely collaborate with other engineering and business teams at Canonical. Services designed, developed, and operated by the Commercial Systems unit are at the heart of Canonical business and Python plays an integral role in it. We are looking for Python Software Engineers for the Integrations team.

The

Integrations

team is responsible for the automation of SAAS user management and onboarding of new data sources to the data mesh. The team designs, develops, and operates a Python based solution to automate SAAS seat management and track spend across the application portfolio. Furthermore the team integrates internal and external data sources into the data mesh using open-source ETL solutions, enabling more data driven decisions in the organization.

Location : This role will be based remotely in the EMEA region.

Role description

We are looking for a self-motivated software engineer with experience developing in Python, to work on test automation tools or Linux based embedded hardware. This role offers an exciting opportunity to push the industry forward by enabling entirely new Linux based hardware testing capabilities, scaling up hardware certification efforts and allowing for deeper test coverage.

The role involves the development and maintenance of Canonical's open source certification tools, supporting the creation of hardware solutions for test automation, and automating our existing processes. We seek out continuous process and tooling improvements as part of expanding the certification test suites, ultimately to improve the quality of Linux experience felt by millions of Linux end users.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and develop new features to our Python based test automation tools like Checkbox, used by both in-house teams and industry partners.
• Invent new ways to enable remote, automated testing.
• Help build the software counterpart to in-house designed testing hardware to help test device enablement (graphics, hotplug, bluetooth, etc).
• Write functional and performance tests to support hardware enablement and to protect from regressions.
• Participate in meetings involving international travel 2-3 times per year.

Canonical is building a new generation of Ubuntu-based container images to simplify open-source application deployment across the world. These container images will be free to use with long-term security commitments, and engineered for performance, security and usability. In this role, you'll be building and maintaining an ever-growing portfolio of container images while working with multiple teams, both inside and outside Canonical, to ensure these are of the highest quality and offer a seamless Ubuntu user experience. You will also be highly involved in the implementation and maintenance of the Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery automation around these container images, for which you are expected to demonstrate deep insights into container-based DevOps.

You will be contributing to fast-moving products like Rocks (OCI images) and thus have the chance to help steer and consolidate this growing team. You'll gain experience with numerous container technologies and open source projects, where your feedback and contributions will be critical to driving widespread container adoption. Our mission is to reinvent the way companies manage their open source information systems - on public clouds and in their own data centers. To achieve that we are building a new community around Python opscode for open source applications, running on Kubernetes. We want to move all of Canonical and Ubuntu IS onto this new, open source codebase.

We are confident that we can dramatically improve the experience of running complex business operations - and then we can help our customers embrace those new techniques and products. Traditionally, IS is an inward-facing operation. We would like to transform our IS team into an extension of the product engineering capability at Canonical. Our internal workloads are in many cases the same open source workloads that our customers want to operate. This team will productize those workloads for real-time automated operations on Kubernetes.

This role is ideal for software engineers who enjoy Python, have a passion for distributed systems, and an interest in the entire Linux stack - from kernel to networking to virtualization and containers. It is a role that requires rigor in both code and customer interactions. Our engineers are technically astute open source enthusiasts who are excited about cloud computing and are ready to join a global team charged with delivering world class services to our customers.

Strong Python development skills and familiarity with Kubernetes are key requirements of this role. You'll work closely with other teams in Canonical to ensure your products operate reliably, efficiently and scale to production sized workloads for our customers looking to adopt cutting-edge technology. You will participate and be responsible for ensuring sound software architecture and follow best practices in software quality, testing and documentation.

The role entails

• Work in Python to design and deliver open source software operations code
• Work across the entire Linux stack, from kernel, networking, storage, to applications
• Learn to think rigorously about application and infrastructure reliability
• Shape high quality open source monitoring and alerting infrastructure
• Simplify open source operations for our customers and open source community
• Demonstrate sound engineering design and testing principles in your code
• Follow agile software development practices
• Coach and develop your colleagues where you have insights
• Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with company values
• Work from home with global travel once or twice a year for up to 2 weeks for events

We are hiring talented Software Engineers with strong Python, Packaging and Linux skills and who want to have a positive impact on the day-to-day workflow of thousands of snap, rock and charm publishers. To be successful on this team you'll need to be interested in packaging formats, build systems and automation that can simplify the lives of developers and engineers trying to ship software to the widest possible audience.

We design and maintain specialist Python tools to support the developer build and publication process. The team takes responsibility for tooling that builds snaps, charms and more recently, rocks.

Snapcraft allows developers to deliver app updates to millions of Linux systems automatically, eliminating the long tail of supported releases and complex install instructions. Snapcraft enables thousands of applications from over a thousand developers, including well-recognised names like Spotify, Slack, and Microsoft.

Likewise, Charmcraft enables collaboration between charmed operator developers, and publication on Charmhub, home of the Charmed Operator Collection. Charmed Operators enable developers to package software like databases, event queues, caches, observability tools, identity tools and more, right alongside the operations code that enables teams to integrate and operate that software at scale from Day 0 to Day 1,000, and beyond.

And Rockcraft provides the means for container developers to build production-grade Ubuntu-based container images, regardless of their experience as a software developer. These container images are called Rocks and can be found in various popular container registries, like Docker Hub, offering an opinionated and consistent design that focus on security while providing an homogeneous user experience across all rocks.

What we are looking for in you

• You have expertise in Python.
• You have a strong understanding of the makeup of a modern GNU/Linux distribution.
• You have a good understanding of build systems and toolchains, including for cross-compilation.
• Experience working with container technology, such as Docker, Kubernetes and LXD.
• Use your familiarity with languages, toolchains, frameworks, integrations, and CI systems to extend the snap build ecosystem
• Work with external open source and commercial projects to understand how we can better serve community needs.

Canonical is building a new generation of Ubuntu-based container images to simplify open-source application deployment across the world. These container images will be free to use with long-term security commitments, and engineered for performance, security and usability. As with Ubuntu, we will work in the open and welcome community participation.

In this role, you'll be building and maintaining an ever-growing portfolio of container images while working with multiple teams, both inside and outside Canonical, to ensure these are of the highest quality and offer a seamless Ubuntu user experience. You will also be highly involved in the implementation and maintenance of the Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery automation around these container images, for which you are expected to demonstrate deep insights into container-based DevOps.

You will be contributing to fast-moving products like Rocks (OCI images) and thus have the chance to help steer and consolidate this growing team. You'll gain experience with numerous container technologies and open source projects, where your feedback and contributions will be critical to driving widespread container adoption. As an engineer, your seniority will be based on your software development background and ability to lead junior team members.
