Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) is a leading research institute dedicated to improving health outcomes through innovative research in biomedical sciences. We are seeking a dynamic and visionary Scientific Director to lead our Neurological Disorder Research Centre. NDRC Center Goal: Discover and develop strategies for early diagnosis and therapeutic interventions for neurological disorders with emphasis on autism in Qatar and beyond. Center Objectives: Identify and validate genetic, environmental, and molecular risk factors underlying neurological disorders. Innovate molecular diagnostics for intervention in autism and other neurological disorders. Develop precision health strategies for treatment of autism and other neurological disorders. Develop screening tools using digital phenotyping and artificial intelligence for early diagnosis of autism. Position Overview:
As the Scientific Director, you will provide overall leadership in research project management, infrastructure development, strategic planning, and scientific investigation in the field of neurological disorders.
You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of neurological research at QBRI, driving innovation, and ensuring the highest standards of scientific excellence. Key Responsibilities: Develop and implement a 5-year and 10-year Master Plan for neurological disorder research. Lead the preparation and execution of the annual budget and business plan. Oversee the development of infrastructure and laboratory facilities. Lead a team of scientists and researchers to develop new methods and solutions in neurological disorder research. Collaborate with HBKU entities and external partners to secure resources and funding. Ensure compliance with research protocols, safety, and regulatory standards. Foster collaborative relationships with national and international research institutions. Identify, recruit, and motivate a team of scientists to achieve QBRI's vision and mission. Actively participate in basic and applied research to meet the Centre's objectives. Seek and secure external funding to complement HBKU resources. Prepare progress reports and recommend improvements to enhance research performance. Qualifications: PhD in Biomedical/Life Sciences or a related field. 15 years of relevant full-time work experience, with at least 5 years in a senior research leadership position. Strong knowledge of clinical, medical, and biomedical research focusing on neurological disorders. Proven track record in managing research centres and familiarity with research tools, procedures, and protocols. Strategic thinker with project management experience and the ability to manage budgets. Strong leadership, people management, and team-building skills. Ability to thrive in a diverse, multi-cultural environment. Experience in raising funds for research programs. Superior knowledge of biomedical trends, FDA regulations, and international standards for biomedical devices and drug development. Job Responsibilities
Desalination Research and Experimentation:
Perform experimental research on desalination of saline waters using engineered osmosis. Prepare draw and feed solutions with varying chemical compositions. Screen draw solutions for performance. Design and execute desalination experiments to evaluate water flux and solute transport through membranes. Handle and analyze samples. Membrane characterization.
Data Interpretation and Reporting:
Interpret data and prepare reports and result summaries. Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to support experimental design.
Assist in Experimental Research:
Assist in experimental research on chemical treatment and resource recovery from high-salinity waters. Support data collection and analysis for ongoing projects. Maintain safe laboratory practices and ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
Student Mentoring and Supervision:
Mentor and train undergraduate students in laboratory practices. Supervise student activities related to research projects. Provide guidance on experimental methods and safety procedures.

The incumbent will be expected to develop and carry out a research program on applied food safety for multiple food commodities (e.g. produce, meat, dairy, etc.), molecular biology, pathogenesis, molecular epidemiology, evolution, stress response, and transmission of food and waterborne, zoonotic, and other bacterial pathogens and/or spoilage organisms. Responsibilities will include conducting qualitative and quantitative research, including data analysis, dissemination and application of research findings, reporting of results and preparation of manuscripts, and developing research proposals for external funding. This position will also specifically support whole genome sequencing and RNA-seq efforts in the Wiedmann and Martin lab. 1 year appointment, pending renewable funding, available work, and performance; position is full-time. Anticipated Division of Time The incumbent is expected to coordinate and manage a strong research program in applied food safety, microbial ecology, molecular biology, pathogenesis, evolution, stress response, and transmission of food and waterborne, zoonotic, and other bacterial pathogens and/or spoilage organisms. Specific responsibilities will include: Plan, perform, and conduct experiments, including field experiments (30%); Supervise graduate students and technicians (20%); Prepare manuscripts and help with manuscript preparation (35%); Prepare and submit research proposals for funding by USDA, NIH, and other agencies and foundations to support the incumbent’s research and activities (10%); and Represent the research group by attending and presenting at scientific conferences, seminars, workshops, and meetings (5%). Position Function This position requires an experienced scientist to use a broad range of cellular, molecular, and functional genomic techniques in a wide array of marine invertebrate species to interrogate the evolution and development of novel traits. The successful candidate will be expected to develop protocols for using multiple ‘omic techniques (single cell transcriptomics, proteomics, etc.) and optimize new techniques for manipulating gene function in non-model organisms at different life stages. This position will also require the development and maintenance of transgenic animals that will be used to examine the evolution of cell identity within and across species.

Requirements To qualify, applicants must have a Ph.D. and at least three years of demonstrated expertise in molecular biology, transgenesis, genome editing, and protein biochemistry as well as aquatic invertebrate animal husbandry.
